Electric motors coupling and wiring

The rotation direction of a motor supplied with a direct three-phase system is clockwise if L1-L2-L3 phases are respectively connected to U1-V1-W1.

Electric motor coupling depends on the electric network.

2) Single-phase electric motor with capacitor

The starting torque is better (1.8 to 2.5 the rated torque) when the assembly has 2 capacitors (permanent and start).

The start capacitor operates for 2-3 seconds, then is automatically disconnected for a microcontact in the motor. Thus, the permanent capacitor may operate.

When making 220V single-phase motors coils, they are calculated differently than the three-phase motors, in order to include capacitors.

Therefore, a 2.2 kW three-phase motor and a 2.2 kW single-phase motor have the same power, the same rated torque, but different consumptions (in amps). For a single-phase motor, these consumptions are twice higher.

If you modify a three-phase motor by adding capacitors, you will lose 30 % to 50 % of the motor initial power.

3) Two speed asynchronous electric motor (with pole changing windings, also known as Dahlander coupling)

A “Dahlander” motor is a double coil motor that enables the motor to operate at 2 different speeds.
